Diverse Literature Initiative Begins

Salisbury, Md. — The Eastern Shore Literacy Association is supporting diverse literature for all as it kicks off its initiative this fall with offering to support its members, parents, and community members who want to know about appropriate diverse book selections.

“We always felt we supported our members and communities by handing out books, but we want to be more conscientious in making sure all kids can see themselves as characters in those books. Honestly, we haven’t done a good enough job in that area as an Association and we want to have a greater impact on our communities through literacy. We think this is one way to begin supporting diverse literature needs,” Brian Cook, membership director, communicated about the initiative.

The new initiative is being chaired my member Lauren Tanis with numerous ESLA members supporting the initiative.

Some of ESLA’s diverse literature goals include the following:

  • developing diverse literature list by grade levels (August 2020 published list)
  • obtain more grant funding to purchase more diverse books to hand out
  • post regular book reviews on diverse books
  • be more visual at community events to support conversations about diverse literature
