
SALISBURY, Md. – May 18, 2023 – The Eastern Shore Literacy Association (ESLA) has been honored as a luminary in the Organization category at the 9th annual “Light of Literacy” awards, held by the Friends of the Wicomico Public Library. These awards celebrate individuals and organizations that demonstrate a profound understanding of the transformative power of literacy in our community.
“We’re thrilled to recognize the exceptional work being done by the Eastern Shore Literacy Association,” expressed Seth Hershberger, Executive Director of the Wicomico Public Library. “This award allows us to highlight the dedication and selfless efforts of regular individuals who are making a significant impact on the lives of others in our community.”
The event marked the first in-person gathering post-covid, and it was met with enthusiasm and inspiration from attendees. Organizers expressed their hopes that this celebration will encourage greater connections and the exchange of ideas related to literacy throughout the community.
Farah Yahya, Chair of the Friends of Wicomico Public Library and member of the Board of Trustees, shared her belief in the potential for positive change. “I have witnessed remarkable progress within our community. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, these individuals have shown exceptional skills and unwavering passion. We aim to harness that passion and build upon it,” said Yahya.
The Eastern Shore Literacy Association was recognized for its outstanding commitment to advancing literacy in the region. Through their tireless efforts, they have made a significant impact on individuals and communities, promoting literacy as a fundamental tool for personal growth and empowerment.
Executive Director Hershberger expressed his appreciation for the dedicated individuals who often work behind the scenes. “We are continually inspired by the incredible work undertaken by these unsung heroes, who often receive little recognition. Their unwavering commitment to literacy is the cornerstone of this program,” he remarked.
Yahya emphasized the importance of supporting communities in need and fostering talent within them. “We must identify individuals within these communities who require support and possess untapped potential. By involving them in our efforts, sharing ideas, and replicating successful strategies, we can help build strong foundations for their communities,” she explained.
